Welcome to the Whatnot section of Miss Pixie's. We
try to update it with silliness and nonsense as often as
possible.
Latest update, June 18th...Miss Pixie's tiki hut in Rehoboth...some people call it
the "Love Shack"!

My cute little (rented) yard outside of my cute little (rented) house...but the chairs and table are mine, and i consider
the hydrangas mine as well...

My cute little summer home used to be a one car garage...tiny, but all one needs at the beach is here!

The "Big House" ajoining the property, rocking big two person outdoor shower, so i've heard...
this house is available for rent by the week all summer long...it sleeps 6 and is nestled in the quiet little neighborhood
called "the Pines" in Rehoboth. We call it, "so quiet you can hear a pin drop at 10pm on a saturday night, and then
awakened by millions of chirping birds in the morning" neighborhood...or something like that.. lots of the old Rehoboth
cottage charm that is hard to still find. Won't you be my neighbor?

My hydranga bush, i am so proud that there are blooms cause i hacked the hell out of it two years ago and well,
thought i had killed it...

The shed of the "chocolate chip mint house" across the street!

The big beautiful cedar shake house around the corner...i really did see a skunk go in the front door once, followed
by a shriek and then a slamming of the back door and then i saw that little rascal head for the woods, no perfume
left behind...luckily!

So come on in to my little Tiki Hut, notice the framed Tahitian cruise line menus...

the house is filled with fabulous finds from all my auction visits, the water picture i got for $5 at the Christian Life
Thrift store in Lewes!

the painting is by David Amoroso, a local Washington artist, the stereo
is from Ugly Luggage, a great store in Brooklyn, NY, the daisy daybed
once made a brief appearance at Miss Pixie's before i realized...i need that!

Tiki Lounge sign is a gift from Bill at Ruff and Ready, the lamp, fan, table and chairs are from the Salvation Army
in Rehoboth...total cost, somewhere under $40!

My find of the "mid-century"! , a signed Risom chair in perfect condition
found at the Christian Life Thrift for $5! No lie!
Tiki pillow is a gift from Miss Quinn...

Fabulous rattan lamp!

and my favorite, the ceramic lamp that came with the place, perfect!

...and our wonderfully private outdoor shower!

other wonderful homes in the 'hood...

oh you know i love it, it's pink... and i suspect there's a pool somewhere...

...what a great front door!
oh, more later...check back for a fourth of july update!
Most recent update, June 26th, 2006.

We encountered many other crustaceans and sea oddities at the
Mermaid Ball held afterward but first we had to get some boardwalking in...

Carter and Glenn on the Race Track,

Carter checking on the stores as he overlooks all the
school buses that brought some of the swimmers and onlookers in...

a bluehaired beauty at the Clam Bar...

We HAD to try "Shoot the Freak''...

And as darkness fell, we ended our day with one last stop
at Nathan's for a nutritious chili-cheese dog...
what a fun day!
If all goes according to plans, you'll be seeing us IN the mermaid
parade next year!

Latest update, June 15th, 2006.
As you may noticed, the new Miss Pixie's is twice as big as our previous
location and well, that means a lot more furnishings and whatnot..., it also
means a lot more work for Miss Pixie! Lucky for me, I have a wonderful, fun
bunch of helpers every week working hard to make Miss Pixie's as exciting
as we can for you. The lovely Minu is here running the store Thursdays through
Sundays, and Anna is in on Mondays and Tuesdays from 2pm to 7pm, if the
weather is nice...
On Wednesday afternoons, when we arrive back in town with the truck loaded up with
goodies from auctions, Julie (Girl Friday from previous photos), Anna (recent Wilson
High School graduate and aesthetic genius),and sometimes Mr. Mike help out.
We try bring items in as quickly as possible without scoring a $100 parking
parking ticket...ahh, life in Adams Morgan. I've tried to
bribe parking officials with items from McDonald's dollar menu but to no avail.
The rest of the evening is filled with arranging, changing the window, pricing and
updating the website, cleaning (if you're lucky)...and any gossip we may have picked up
during the week...so while it looks like all fun and games, it is a lot of hard work and I
couldn't do it without everyone's help and constant efforts. So without further ado, I have
some photos to share with you to keep you up to date!
June has been a busy month of graduations and celebrations and lots of
Gemini birthday parties...sorry there's no pictures of the Gemini birthday parties...no one needs
to see THAT!
***************************************************************************************************
Miss Anna recently graduated from Wilson High School and had a delightful Mad Hatter's
Tea Party to celebrate. Here's a picture of "Alice in Wonderland" with her former teacher,
Miss Julie...nice shades, Jules...

Anna and her Dad in mid spin!

Anna hamming it up with Miss P,

and again with Miss J! It was a wonderful party with lots of
entertaining friends and family...ask Anna about her "Las Vegas"
idea sometime...what an enlightening afternoon!

and outfits, lots of outfits...

So earlier this month, I went to my niece Caroline's
Kindergarten Graduation...you know, they didn't even
have kindergarten when I was growing up...about
100 years ago...and I can't tell you how happy I was to
get through at least one graduation of my own...

Caroline getting a hug from her big sister, Grace.

...the proud graduate!
*******************************************
In May, I was invited to attend Grace's first communion...
I'm just a Methodist girl, I'd never been. It was wonderful!

Aunt Pixie with Grace and Caroline...

...getting all sugared up on punch and chocolate,
how DO they keep their dresses so white?

...hey, gotta spin when you're all dressed up like that!

...sometimes outta control!

...big smiles...looks like the tooth fairy has been to visit!

...sweet sisters!
***********************************************************
In April, we celebrated my friend Judy's birthday (of Tangier Island and cherry blossom and
"Gates" fame...) with a big dinner in the new Miss Pixie's. Everyone who
knew how to cook (everyone BUT me) brought wonderful food and drink...
I brought the belly dancers...

hey, it's easier than reading a recipe for me...

Miss Judy enjoying her evening...

Larry REALLY enjoying his evening! I believe that was a
feather boa...

Everyone enjoying great food & wine & company!

On Saturday February 11th and some of Sunday the 12th, 2006
we had a wonderful snow storm...the big fluffy kind of snow
without too much weight and no ice, just the way Washingtonians
like it! Sunday the sun came out and melted most of it away but in
the early morning hours just after the sun came out, it was beautiful!

...along 16th Street in Dupont,

at the corner of 19th and R Street...

fluffy tree on R Street,

16th Street,

...berry trees covered with snow,

...church and tree on 16th Street,

my buddy Garrett tree gazing...

Rock Creek...

...and finally, the back alley of the old Miss Pixie's
building!

The following pictures are from Miss Pixie's
trip to New York's Central Park to see "the Gates".

I drove up with my friend Judy...you may remember her
from all those delightful cherry blossom picnic pictures...
she's alway up for an adventure and seeing "the Gates"
in the new fallen snow last week was no exception!

Look at Miss Pixie being all tourist-y and whatnot...

The gates were beautiful and well, they were just
everywhere...23 miles of steel frames and nylon fabric
set against a mostly sunny New York sky!

...there's my Judy!...

occasional gusts of wind really changed the landscape,

and when it was still, it was just as beautiful...

We even ran into a delightful snowman with
color appropriate nose...and all around us kids
were making snow angels and riding sleds on
the hills in the park.

The snow and the sun kept competing....

...and the clouds...

My favorite view was of groups of gates tucked up in the trees,

and the ocassional lone gate,

and the New York cityscape in the background.
The day was filled with citydwellers walking dogs and
or kids and there even a few cross country skiiers!
There were lots of attendants who kept the fabric untangled
with odd metal poles with tennis balls on the ends. These
folks were very informative and told us that they met as a group
with Christo every morning for breakfast and a lecture. Most
art students from around the country who luckily got chosen
for this great project. They gladly gave out fabric swatches of the
orange nylon, come on by Miss Pixie's if you want to see mine!

Photos from the annual Mermaid Parade held each year in Coney Island...what fun!

A beautiful young mermaid was sited lounging among
the vintage cars...

This young lady was part of a group of
fire mermaids riding in on a big firetruck!
This pimped out hearse (with leopard spotted
faux fur interior and a spinning disco ball inside)
was a site to behold!

Some mermaids from the Coney Island Correctional Facility...

Close up of their "sweet ride"...

The Pina Colada stand where my friends spent
most of their time...but not me...I would never...

A friend I met on the parade route...that's a Miss Pixie
wig if ever I saw one!
The Fire Mermaids living it up!

I believe these were the "Goth Mermaids" ....

These beauties were part of the "Sea Monkey" float...

It's hard to see but these ladies had aquariums as their...
well, umm tops...complete with splashing water and fish!

I think these were the "Geisha Mermaids" or maybe
just some drag queens that wandered in off the street!

You know, I'm not sure quite what was going on here...

This was a group of Viking chicks....that's mermaid related, right?

These were the "Meter Mermaids", giving out tickets...

One of the group of "Pikes on Bikes"!

A close up of the "Big Fat Mermaid Wedding".

I believe these were "Nile Mermaids"...

Just a random mermaid...

Getting political....
After the festivities we had to sample the
true splendor of Coney Island! Here's a shot
as we wait to board the WONDER WHEEL!

Our bird's eye view...we were stuck up here a bit longer
than I cared for!

Another view of the beach...

Paraders wandering the boardwalk...

An amazing display of vintage tricked out Schwinns!

It was a wonderful day and I can't wait for next year's
parade...I think Miss Pixie's definitely needs to be
represented next year!
Have a great Fourth of July , we'll see ya next week!
************************************************************
Well...what can I say? What an interesting Easter weekend! For those of you 'in the know",our friend
Douglas hosted his annual Easter Party and Bonnet Contest. Words cannot do the scene justice so
I will try to just show you some pictures!

Dr. Dave wowed the crowd with his construction man hat, thankfully this picture cannot pick up too
many details...needless to say he was truly a winner...first prize!

"The Glenn", as we all call him...was second runner up with his "Palm Hat" made of real palms and well,
a rubber palm on the top. Glenn said he learned how to make the hat by watching how to build thatched
huts on Discovery Channel...someone take away the remote!!!

Our secret surprise judge, none other than the infamous John Dudash...he was more brutal with scores
and sarcasm than Simon on American Idol...and a bit gender biased, no girls won!
One of the most delightful costumes of all...the Cicada Woman! (aka Wonder Woman)...with her
lengthy proboscis for enjoying Easter punch! No less delightful is Miss Jody with her
skewered peeps bonnet!

Everyone's favorite, (but the judge's...) was Miss Emily with her Dior inspired bonnet created by Randy
and literally topped with a $100 bill bribe for the judge, which he took but still did not give her the prize!
Maybe we should call her Miss Florida and demand a recount, god knows she got the popular vote!

Our delightful host and Mr. Tom in the background...with his "Southern Hemisphere" creation.
The woman in the front? In off the streets, I suspect...

Handsome Joe in his Crown of Bunnies...what a great bartender....and dresser!

Is that someone in an Easter Burka?

Some of Douglas' handiwork...papermache bunnies..
and two boys with their purdy birdy bonnets!

More foolishness....

Northern and Southern Hemispheres, together at last...
and that tie matches so nicely!

Is it the camera or the punch? Everything is looking tilt-y
in the world of Mr. Joe and Miss Kate!

Pretty boys in pretty bonnets!
Well, good fun was had by all and we all look forward to next year's soiree!
************************************************************************************
It's about time I got caught up on the " what not part" of life! The date of this update is April 2, 2004.
This has been a cool and rainy cherry blossom season but beautiful and long lasting!
I hope everyone got a chance to go down to the Tidal Basin to see all the trees in their full glory.
The whole town seemed to pop out in blossoms overnight and cherry blossoms can be seen
all over our city! Not everyone is as enthusiastic about the blossoms but I believe one trip to the
Jefferson Memorial during peak bloom will brighten anyone's day...remember to get out the car
and walk around!

Just a photo of me and my best blossom viewing buddy, Judy!
We are dedicated fans of the blossoms and were out at 6 a.m.
on Monday morning wearing our pink and setting up our breakfast
table under the trees!

Judy arrived in her Citroen truckette...

My friends Larry and Judy finishing up our cherry blossom
breakfast! Our menu included fresh baked cherry scones,
cherry cream cheese, cherry yogurt, pomegranate juice,
fresh grapefruit juice, fresh raspberries and strawberries,
and Japanese tea!

This picture was taken around 6 a.m. March 30th.
Early morning visits are advised for those that want
to avoid the crowds...and there is plenty of parking!

The sun peeked out for a minute to help show off the
blossoms!

Larry and Judy yucking it up under the blossoms!

How can you NOT smile with all these blossoms around?

My friend David came in from a long winter in Rehoboth
to visit the cherry blossoms...and all his friends in D.C.
He and his friend Larry are apparently overwhelmed by the view...

David and me! Hey, isn't it supposed to be warm in
spring?

David has always been a huge fan of Eleanor's!
...and yes, David's hair is leopard-spotted...

These are some of the original trees given to the
United States by Japan.
The cherry blossoms are an exquisite and fleeting
celebration of springtime as well a symbol of cultural
exchange and diplomacy between countries. Give yourself
a real treat and have a stroll around the Tidal Basin.
And remember, don't pick the blossoms!
Cherry trees are very delicate and susceptible to disease
and climbing on them or plucking at them is not good for them...
and also punishable by fine from the Park Service!
Enjoy the blossoms!
*********************************************************************************************
I am very lucky to have friends that just keep on moving around the world!
One of my very best friends lives in Nassau with her wonderful husband and family
and I was fortunate enough to be invite to visit in March...and you remember what
March was like here in D.C.... I was happy to be where it was warm!

The view of the ocean, (yes, that beautiful blue-green is water!) right out front of Sanny's
house.

The colorful architecture all around the island...

Miss Mira on her way to the submarine ride!

Twenty thousand leagues under the sea...well maybe more
like twelve feet....

More great Bahamian homes!

Sanny's garden, complete with year round blooms
and tropical birds!

Giant cruise ships dwarfing the docks and local boats...

Another great Bahamian home!

One of the many windows in my bedroom at Sanny's house!
Nice view!

Fancy Atlantis hotel...this as close as I could afford to get!

Miss Mira in front of a funny mural!
What a great trip, I hope I can sneak down south and see them
again..and get away from this rain up here...

Better late than never...pictures of my trip to Paris...October 2003!

The cafe down the street from where we stayed in Paris.

A beautiful shot of Luxembourg gardens!

A delightful grove of park benches and trees!

Yummy treats in a Parisian pastry shop, we sampled as
many as we could!

Great graffiti!

And you thought parking was bad in Adams Morgan...

A painting of cowboys at the last supper...in an shop
specializing in American kitsch...

Great travel companions at Rosanna's birthday party!
...note the empty wine glasses...and the big smiles!

What a fun bunch of guests! And what a great selection
of cheeses and wine...

The birthday girl blowing out her plum tart!

Look away if you are a vegetarian...or you may soon be one!
Roast suckling pig as the main course...now why did they
have to leave the head on?

The handsome nephews!

Just a small dinner party...for 33 people!
The whole trip was wonderful! We went to the Edith Piaf
exhibit and well, as many museums as we could get in to.
We scouted out some great wine bars and ate like kings.
Our hosts were most gracious and we had a fantastic time
and...well, what a great city!

This portion updated on November 1, 2003.
So much has happened since this was last updated......including the wrath of Isabelle!
Luckily, up here on the hill in Adams Morgan we did OK. Most of the neighborhood didn't even lose
power and there were very few trees down. Many other people and places were not so fortunate.
The Eastern Shore of Maryland and places like Tangier Island, Va. were hit very hard. I drove down to
a beautiful area below Cambridge, Maryland known as Hooper's Island and took a few shots...what
a wonderful and isolated area.

This boat was on the side of the road a week after the storm.
It's name...SWAMP THING!

A beautiful home with lots of birdhouses out front!

A house that seemed to have survived the high waters
despite it's proximity to Blackwater Wildlife Refuge, a truly amazing place!

A weeping willow tree at the parking lot at Great Marsh boat dock in Cambridge

And another joyful sight! My niece Megan and her birthday cake...sweet sixteen!

I will keep updating...keep checking in!

Hi! Finally the whatnot is working...
This is just a little place to let you know what Miss Pixie
is up to all summer, cause she surely ain't in the store...
The summer started with all the fun and hijinx of the Mermaid Parade in
Coney Island...

with our delightful hostess, Jayme...caught here sipping champagne
at that fancy Phillip Starck hotel in Manhattan...who is that
handsome mystery man in the background?

oh, there he is...on his way to the parade! i couldn't understand
why it took us so long to get a cab...

or maybe this gorgeous seaweed monster is what frightened away
the cab drivers...

surely this lovely little mermaid could entice SOMEONE to pick us up!

Though we got rained on and the parade was stopped because of
lightning, we still got to see some great mermaids...especially this
one in the champagne, hum...seems like a theme!
We went to a lot of fun places in NYC...Waikiki Wally's and the now famous
LUCKY CHENG'S, a fun, fun, fun drag restaurant and bar! We also went to
the Coral Room which features a giant fishtank behind the bar with real mermaids
swimming around for your entertainment! So much to do....!
After leaving the Big Apple, I headed out to visit friends in the North Fork of Long Island
and went to a great store in Greenport called Beale & Bell, if you are ever out that way,
it's a MUST SEE! Lots of great furniture at great prices!
Along the way, I snapped a few shots of this beautiful 1963 Ford pickup truck!

What a beauty! The owner does landscaping...love to see a truck being used!
In July I took local cultural icon and architectural historian extraordinare, Wanda to the
Celcil County Fair in Elkton, Md. to show her what country living is all about in Maryland.
Of course, she had me stopping a Art Deco Toll Plaza on the way for some photos....
We met a handsome State Trooper who would not allow us to take his picture, security
reasons we suppose...

You shoulda seen the rest of the Toll Plaza...and the State Trooper!
Ya gotta love a uniform...

At the fair, (which charged $5 admission!) we saw alot
of new rides like Dylan's Dosers and

though this is not a great picture...this actually is
Galaxy Girl and her albino python and a
little boy who seems very pleased with his proximity
to the python and Galaxy Girl...

Well, there's me next to my favorite tractor...we were lucky
enough to be there for the antique tractor pull...

and the Parade of Power...gotta love a girl on a tractor!

There were livestock just hanging out waiting to be judged

and reminders about how utilitarian farm life really is...

...meat goats, sounds like a name for a band...

There were pies and cabbages to be judged...

and lots of fun kids....

and beautiful feathered friends!

It was a wonderful evening...

right up to the end...family style!
Another July adventure included going to Tangier Island, Va.
way out in the middle of the Chesapeake Bay with my friend Judy!
She's the best travel companion, asks lots of questions and is not
afraid to try anything new...like a trip into the "Double Six" which we
were told is mostly where the menfolk hang out...
The hours at the "66" are from 2 a.m. til 8 a.m. daily, it's where the watermen
come for breakfast and local gossip before heading out to catch Blue Crabs...
Tangier Island is the soft shell crab capitol of the world!!
We stayed at Hilda Crockett's Chesapeake Inn, amazing!!
A room for two is $90 and includes a big country breakfast and a huge
family style crabcake and ham dinner! What a bargain! Everyone on the
island is very friendly and relaxed and why not? There's no cell phone reception
and no cars on the island and everyone greets everyone with a friendly "hey!",
whether you're a tourist or a local!

Here's Judy, glad that we got our crab cake sandwiches before the line got too long!
Judy quickly pronounced these crab cakes the best she's ever had! I grew up on the
Eastern Shore of Maryland and already knew that to be true, but had to have one for lunch
each day just to be sure!

Here's where we had our dinner across from the guest house!

Some beautiful Tangier scenery, the island is 4 miles by 1 mile but
most is marsh!

Everyone uses bikes, golfcarts, feet or boats to get around...gotta love it!

The beaches are wonderful but bring the bug spray to ward off
"green heads"! If the breeze is good you don't have to worry about
them and instead you'll see hundreds of dragonflies!

An amazing Tangier sunset!

All the houses seem to have resident kitties and signs posted
saying not to let them in! We didn't see any dogs til the second
day we were there, most seem to be on the workboats with
the men out crabbing!

Some local yard art!

There a handful of wonderful little gift shops to see on your
walking or riding tour through the town!

The homes all have raised sidewalks because of flooding,
the island is just a few feet above sea level! Most homes
have picket fences or chain link, mostly to keep tourists from
wandering into their charming yards!
At night, we went for a walk and noticed that most of the locals
were doing the same wandering around and leaning over fences to
chat with friends and neighbors about the events of the day!
This 2 day adventure was one of the highlights of my summer...
Check on line to find out how to get to this little treasure of the Bay!
Remember it's a island and you'll need to take the relaxing hour and
a half ferry ride from Reedville, Va. to get there and back!
